Ten eerste zijn deze krijgers in de stad even zinloos als een melkmeisje op een struisvogelboerderij. Ze kunnen alleen door de stad lopen, een opmerkelijke kracht imiteren, en trekken zich terug in hun kazerne die beschilderd is met rood lood van de regering.

Border stands still, but so do people having to fight their lives to cross it. Crossing with small boats continues, and continues being possibly the most mediatized way of crossing. Here we talk about it, here the BBC talks about recent crossings. Also: Priti Patel plans to use the navy to tackle the growing number of migrants crossing the Channel from northern France, but (surprise!) thatwould be illegal! A shame for people so attached to the idea of legal / illegal to have made crossing with a ferry impossible for many, forcing them to risk their lives in smaller boats with their dangerous politics!
The Calais town hall doesn’t differ much in terms of announcing and talking things they don’t know. Sat 8 August, some people had announced they would take showers and talk in public square about the lack of access to water for people sleeping rough: about 4 water points for more than a thousand people. Seeming to think pointing out the issue would cause problems of public security (really?), the municipality announced on the press that they would have issued one “arrêté” for this time again. Clearly with short memory,as warnings were already issued by tribunals a couple years ago concerning their abusive use of “arrêté” to forbid demonstrations/ events that they didn’t like without any grounds, But, this time… lie after lie: it wasn’t the case. Only, the water points nearby the event (that took place, despite the attempt to intimidate people gathering) were closed for the occasion. What a great symbolism!

Now they rewrite tribunal decision, with the deputy major Mignonet stating on the printed press ” Pourtant, depuis 2017, des arrêtés municipaux interdisent les distributions de repas aux migrants en centre-ville de Calais. « Elles restent interdites aux associations, c’est de la provocation, et elles vont à l’encontre de la décision du Conseil d’État en 2017, estime Philippe Mignonet, adjoint chargé de la sécurité. Le préfet a été informé et on attend sa décision face à la situation. »”
Oh well, the Conseil d’État decision itself tells a very different story, saying that there is no ground for the town hall to take such decisions and they are therefore invalid! Here the full reading. Mignonet, liar!
A couple of evictions were made with the new old technique of ordonnances sur requêtes. These evictions, larger in scale and more effective than the every-two-days raids, have seen part of the people trying to cross to the UK brought to centres further inland or scattered around the city. This means relative chaos and harsh material conditions, but also more people of color present in public space, and smaller camps, more made out of affinity groups rather than vicinity with crossing places and services allowing for new old forms of self organizing. Oops! predictable” side effect” that could harm the apartheid politics carried on by the city..!
The evictions made a great excuse for the state to stop providing services in one of the two-three places they were providing some food and basic access to hygiene, a still largely inhabited industrial area. Left, one water point for the several hundred people scattered in the surrounding. But please, wash your hands often.
The town hall continues to justify every-two-days raids and larger evictions as inhabited places are unhealthy, and neighbours complain about rats and alike. Yet, the town hall announces their firm refusal to put bins or even just a collection system in place. Whose hands are dirty here? Sounds all too much like many times before, one example of which can be found in this article about Black Lives Matter from 2016.

Ik ben Sjerp uit Amsterdam en ik heb iets gebouwd dat jullie misschien wel interessant vinden: kraakapp.nl. Hier heb ik vandaag een prototype van mijn kraakapp online gezet. Deze app zoekt aan de hand van overheidsdata panden die mogelijk kraakbaar zijn en zet deze op de kaart. De app geeft op de kaart aan hoe oud bepaalde faillissementsdata is, waarbij een ouder faillissement een beter krakend pand oplevert. Het zijn allemaal industrieele of commercieele panden. Per adres kan je inzicht krijgen in de rechtsbank uitspraken, maar bovenal de relevante KvK informatie. Zijn er op dit adres nog andere bedrijven geregistreerd? Zijn die gestopt of niet? Zijn er delen van deze keten die niet failliet zijn?
Kraakapp.nl is een nieuw stuk gereedschap gebouwd uit solidariteit met en liefde voor alles wat kraakt en piept. Het vervangt nadrukkelijk niet de andere gereedschappen zoals taggen, waarbij je de leegstand ter plekke controleert. Deze app is bedoelt om een indruk te geven van wat er mogelijk is qua locaties, om met name in het begin van de zoektocht te helpen met orienteren, en om op plekken te kijken
naar interessante plekken waar je anders mogelijk nooit zou komen. Hotel Spaander in Volendam staat bijvoorbeeld nog leeg. Ook interessant is de Amsterdam Film School B.V. op de Panamalaan. Mooie filmzaal misschien? En de Vapiano in Groningen natuurlijk. Naarmate de app verder rijpt eet het meer staatsdata op en weet het van meer adressen. Momenteel zit er 4 maanden aan gegevens in
en dat leverde tot nu toe 1829 mogelijk interessante adressen op, verdeeld over heel Nederland.
De app kan op heel veel manieren veel beter. De databronnen kunnen veel rijker en breder zodat er meer adressen gepakt worden en er meer relevante informatie gegeven kan worden zoals vergunningen e.d. Een zoekfunctie zou handig zijn. Enzoverder. Maar om te beginnen heb ik dit prototype gebouwd, een beperkte beta. Voordat ik allemaal dingen ga bouwen die misschien niemand wilt hebben! Ik wil weten:
1. Is er interesse in dit systeem?
2. Werkt dit voor mensen, in principe?
De app is open source, ik verwelkom in principe alle kwesties&problemen / verbetersuggesties / codebijdragen. De controle over het project hou ik evenwel (vooralsnog) in mijn eigen handen. Om de app een goede kans te geven garandeer ik het komend jaar het onderhoud.

The Meduza news outlet continues to be at the top of its game, and today it published an excellent piece by Andrey Pertsev and Maxim Solopov called ‘What Putin reads,’ with the subtitle ‘Vital policymaking in Russia relies on sociological research conducted by the Secret Service. Here’s how it works.’ It’s about the polling carried out by the Federal Protective Service, the FSO, which at first glance may seem an anomalous role for an agency mainly known for its Kremlin Regiment and the black-suited ‘bullet-catchers’ of Putin’s close security detail.
However, it reflects the FSO’s wider mission, a more holistic sense of quite what protecting the federal centre – and ‘the Body,’ Putin – entails, a product of previous FSO director Evgeny Murov. He was something of a legend in his circles, and not only kept the FSO more honest than, say, the FSB (please note, that hardly means wholly uncorrupt) but also became what in some ways was Putin’s unofficial national security adviser, in the sense of the relatively loyal, well-informed figure who could and would warn the boss when some of what the other security agencies were telling him deserved greater scepticism. His retirement in 2016 and replacement with General Dmitry Kochnev – a perfectly competent protection officer, but not a figure with the same weight of experience and reputation – did reduce the FSO’s clout but above all deprive the system of this informal check and balance. Now the only real national security adviser in the Security Council Nikolai Patrushev, the hawk’s hawk, whom I recently described as “the most dangerous man in Russia.”
Every day, the FSO – like the FSB and SVR – provides Putin with an intelligence brief, although in their case largely on what’s going on within the elite. However, their massive network of polling, part of their wider mission to monitor potential risks to the stability and security of the state, also feeds not just into these briefings but their and the Presidential Administration’s general work.
To this end, Pertsev and Sopolov do an excellent job of exploring not just how this is done, but what biases appear in the FSO’s polls.
“Usually what I did was I took an FSO survey and a VTsIOM survey, I added up the numbers, and then I divided them by two. And that’s how I got a result close to the truth,” a former Kremlin official told Meduza with a smile. He says the FSO’s sociological work is “gloomy, maybe even too gloomy,” while VTsIOM’s analysis has the opposite problem: it’s too rosy. According to a source in the Putin administration, the Kremlin’s current domestic policy team also believes that the FSO’s polling “lays it on too thick.” A source with ties to Russia’s government cabinet told Meduza that the Federal Protective Service offers “more pessimistic and bad numbers on average” than VTsIOM and FOM (the Public Opinion Foundation, a nonprofit organization that works primarily with the Kremlin).
“The FSO’s job is to red-flag threats and identify them clearly. They consider themselves ‘the eye of the sovereign’ and they think it’s better ‘to be safe.’ Maybe they’re right,” a source close to the Kremlin told Meduza when asked about the agency’s “gloomy numbers.”
I thought this was especially interesting, especially when combined with examples of their political impact (such as in convincing Putin that lockdown needed to be eased to placate the public). I had heard several anecdotes and indications about this polling, but not this clear assessment of the bias. Given that the FSO surveys do tend to be taken seriously in the Kremlin, this tendency to focus on the threats is especially important given Putin’s own risk-averse nature. In theory, they could be spun as evidence of reasons for a change in policy, but my suspicion is that they will instead only reinforce the essentially conservative nature of the regime: change is destabilising, change is scary.
